Day 389: Rothenberg ob der Taube

We decided to take a road trip to a city on the Romantic Road.  It was a beautiful sunny day but it was still on the cool side.

Once again, we slept late and left a little later than we should have.  I can't complain about it too much since Ted rarely, if ever, gets a chance to sleep  in.

It was only supposed to take an hour and a half but there was traffic because of the road construction...and then there was an accident on top of that. The traffic was backed up into a tunnel and that's where we were...in a tunnel, until traffic cleared.

Once there, we parked in a large parking lot. There was a carriage with horses just sitting in the parking lot. And there was a picnic table in the middle of the parking lot so we had lunch before checking out the city.

We walked through a gate in the wall  to the city on the other side.  We proceeded to the markt platz where we took a bicycle taxi tour of the city. It was terrific!!  Just about when the tour was over, my camera's batteries were gone and I missed a few photos.

This is a restaurant but used to be the city's blacksmith.  It ceased being a blacksmith about 15 years ago.  It's amazing that it would have been needed in the 90s!

We also missed the opportunity to go the the 2,000 sq. meter criminal museum and we didn't get a chance to walk the 1 mile and a half wall surrounding the city which means we're coming back!

 We had dinner at a small restaurant near the milche platz. The food was very good. Ted had a Bavarian specialty called Maultaschen which is sliced rolled pasta with spinach or meat and then fried with scrambled eggs. It doesn't sound too appetizing but it's really good!!   I had ham and cheese in a rolled pancake (don't know the name of it) but it was really good.

We walked around the city and picked up a few souvenirs and a couple of puzzles for our grandson. We also stopped at a bakery and purchased two Schneeballen...a Rothenberg specialty desert. They are deep fried and covered with different toppings. They have been producing these desert balls for over four hundred years!!

We decided to go for a short ride on the Romantic Road. A short ride turned into an hour and then we found the freeway and drove home. At home we had our desert balls and they were delicious!!
