Day 102: Drive to Koblenz!

This is the start of a long weekend. Ted has off today in observance of the 4th of July holiday tomorrow.

We have decided to drive to Koblenz and take a river cruise on the Rhine to Mainz and then either take the train back or another cruise back. It’s going to be a fun, exciting weekend. At first I was going to schedule a train trip, but it’s only about three hours away and it seems silly to take a train and have to worry about timetables.

Ted has decided to get a treatment on his arm and a massage this morning before we go to Koblenz. While he’s doing that, I busy myself with cleaning the apartment in anticipation of our weekly “inspection”.

We were all packed (just one small bag). We will be staying the night in Koblenz, then taking the cruise which will last almost all day, then staying the night in Mainz and then coming back to Koblenz where we will get our car and go home on Sunday.

The three hour trip turned into four hours because of the traffic and construction. The Germans obviously don’t celebrate Independence Day (why would they?) but I think everyone was taking the weekend off early!

After so many hours in the car, we were glad when “Julie” got us to our hotel, the Mercure. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find the entrance. Ted wanted to check in and then park in the underground parking lot. Well, we drove around in circles two or three times and then gave up and parked the car in the underground parking lot.

We checked in and got to our room. From the hallway on our floor, there was a really good view of the river and a bridge.

There was also another good view of the river from our room’s window.

At this point, it was getting late so we decided to eat at the very German-looking but large restaurant next door. To get there, we had to go through the hotel’s dining room and their terrace and walk down a flight of stairs. But it was worth it. The place is beautiful.

We decided to eat on their terrace since the weather was so beautiful. I had a salad and a potato dish. Ted opted for steak.

By the time we got back to the room, Ted realized his dinner choice was a mistake. The steak was not cooked properly and his stomach could not handle it. This is not the first time he has suffered this way. He has now decided to never eat “beef” out again. I’ll have to keep reminding him, because he forgets after a while and does it again! If he wants a steak, we’ll have to get a grill and make it ourselves.

Hopefully, we can get a good night’s rest for our trip in the morning.
